Great news out of Philadelphia: Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park (TRIP) earned the national Phoenix Award Grand Prize for excellence at the Brownfields 2011 conference on April 6. The award honors the Port and partners Alcoa and FedEx Ground for revitalizing the former home of an aluminum smelter in east Multnomah County to productive use.
The Port and our partners were notified in February that TRIP was selected as a Phoenix Award winner from the Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska region. The project was then awarded the top honor from a group of 10 projects located across the country – each representing a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency region.
Created in 1997, the Phoenix Awards recognize those working to transform blighted and contaminated areas to productive new uses and sustainable development projects. Finalists are selected by a panel that includes environmental professionals, government officials, and business leaders who consider the magnitude of the project, innovative approaches, solutions to regulatory and social issues, and impacts on the community.
